Michael Phelps' return to competition for the first time since the Beijing Olympics is on hold. The swimming superstar has been suspended for three months and had his training stipend revoked by USA Swimming.

It's the latest complication for the 23-year-old Olympic great since a photo surfaced showing him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

He also lost a high-profile sponsor Thursday when Kellogg Co. said it wouldn't renew its deal with Phelps that expires later this month.

i like not being famous -- it means i get to smoke weed all the time and not get shamed worldwide for it :)

Michael Phelps is under criminal investigation because of the photo of him smoking a marijuana pipe.

South Carolina's Richland County Sheriff's Dept. is trying to determine whether the swimmer broke the law by smoking pot in the county, the agency announced. British tabloid News of the World, which published the photo, claims the picture was taken at a Nov. 6 party at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.

"This case is no different than any other case,'' Sheriff Leon Lott told The State, a Columbia newspaper. "This one might be a lot easier since we have photographs of someone using drugs and a partial confession. It's a relatively easy case once we can determine where the crime occurred.''

Possession of marijuana in South Carolina is a misdemeanor, and Phelps could face up to 30 days in jail or a $570 fine, plus court costs

Two of Michael Phelps' leading sponsors expressed support for the Olympic great Monday, a day after he apologized for being photographed in a British newspaper inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

Luxury Swiss watchmaker Omega termed Phelps' actions a private matter and "nonissue." Swim wear manufacturer Speedo called the 23-year-old American a "valued member of the Speedo team."

This is just another article that proves that smoking pot does not ruin your life. At least he wasn't taking steroids. I just want to know how he can smoke and swim, that's gotta hurt.

i love how everyone thinks his smoking pot is such a fucking crime, but no one would ever dare try and to surface the truth on whether this guy was on steroids for the olympics.

(now i know no specific evidence has surfaced on his steroid use, and they 'say' he tested negative for them, but you can't tell me that you win 14 gold medals on hard work alone because otherwise it would have been done decades ago. athletes have been getting away with steroid use for years and years and years now, that fact most certainly is proven. canadian sprinter ben johnson had this gold medal taken away, and it was given to american carl lewis. later, evidence proved that carl lewis himself had been on steroids. sounds like we just wanted the american to win, doesn't it? but THAT'S another issue...)

if phelps wants to burn, let him! weed is harmless, he's young, and to be high is a personal choice.

oh just grow a spine and own it. most gold medals ever, and an enthusiastic pothead...you could either stand up and and put those together and make your medals even more meaningful, or be a cowering hypocrite and slither away.

So he's gonna loose most of his advertising deals, and in exchange become the new posterboy for the legalization movement. Couldn't have gone better for us :-)
