Hey Chris, having spent over 20 years practicing both methods of self-exploration, meditation and entheogensis, what I have learned is tha Consciousness has levels of depth, from diversified to unified. Psychedelics without some sort of meditative practice are very unpredictable and chaotic , but do reveal the inner contours of mind in complete technicolor multidimensionality. Meditation is a slower process that reveals the inner realms of Mind by the simple process of releasing the layers of surface mind to uncover the deeper dimensions, leading one all the way to Source. Now both methods in conjunction ( fueling the brain with an entheogen and using a meditation technique to navigate the space) and you have an incredibly powerful technology for sef-exploration and self-realization. I've discovered, reflecting many other mystic systems, eight basic levels to consciousness 1) physical (sensory world) 2) emotional 3) mental-conceptual 4) social 5) psychosomatic 6) psychic 7) subtle (shamanic) 8) causal (unity consciousness-Source). How all this is reflected in our brain is a conversation James and I have had for a while and requires a more indepth discussion. To simplify: for me, psychedelics showed me the way to inner freedom and Unity, I then had to walk the path, and for me that has meant meditation, yoga, permaculture, and service.

Meditation and Psychedelics.

An essay on the intersection of the two tools of self and other exploration.
One of the question I toss around is: What's the difference between meditative states and trance states and hallucinations? Are they matters of degree or completely different mental states?

I've noticed that depending on dose, set and setting I've had either trance like states of hallucinations and I've also had clear minded entagogenic meditative states on various substances and while soberly being mindful.

Any ideas or opinions on the subject?
