New Dehli rave bust commentary

Proving that they are serious about going after the drug smuggling "Mafia", the police responsible for the massive bust at the Pune rave are holding all of the nearly 280 detainees for further questioning. A recent op-ed piece on ibnlive.com suggests that since only a few of those charged were actually caught dealing drugs, the police are treating the rest of the party's attendees unfairly.

According to the article, here is a list of what police seized:

  • 100 gm of hashish
  • 2.5 kg of ganja
  • Seven bottles of phenyl phenhydrochloride eye drops
  • 1,500 "California drops"
  • Cellphones
  • Music systems
  • Liquor and beer

There are those dang "California drops" again. If this is slang for MDMA why don't they just say ecstasy? Is this some kind of local thing? Why are they playing with my mind!?

Another interesting note, it seems that the police are now looking into networking sites like Orkut.com and isratrance.com as potential tools for illegal rave promoters. The cybercops are onto you now guys. You're like totally busted.

To make the story even lamer, it looks like they actually try to prosecute anyone there who tests positive for drugs!

interesting, thanks.

here's some further tidbits and a possible answer on the 'California Drops':

[link]
--------------------------------------------------------------
The police had information that the revellers would use a bag of California Drops worth Rs 3 crore [sic?] in the international market. Each drop of the drug costs Rs 800. “We don’t know the chemical combination, but the drug is called California Drops. We didn’t find a bag full of this drug as our informants told us, but our searches will continue,” Patil said
------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------
The police are on the lookout for Shaina, a woman of Irish origin, who was supposed to supply 3000 `California drops.' A California drop is acid that is put on a stamp, which is then chewed; the cost of each drop is put between Rs. 350 and 500.
--------------------------------------------------------------
or it could be one of the more potent DOx psychedelic amphetamines the only real ways to tell would be a reliable trip duration report or some fancy ass chemical analysis method.

The exchange rate is currently 1 USD = 44.1700 INR
so the drops cost ~$18.11 or ~$7.92 - $11.31, depending on the respective article.

The second article had a more detailed seizure list:
"Among the items recovered at the party spot were 2.5 kg of marijuana (ganja), 100 grams of hashish (charas), seven bottles of phenylfine hydrochloride, 15 boxes of beer, 17 cheelams, cigarettes and condoms, all valued around Rs. 5 lakh. The police also seized a Dolby Music System, 45 four wheelers, and 29 two-wheelers."

Amusingly, the second spelling option for the phenyl shit also only turned up the original article in a google search. This time, though, google suggested this as an alternative:
'Did you mean: "phenylephrine hydrochloride" '

"Phenylephrine or neosynephrine is an α-adrenergic receptor agonist used primarily as a decongestant, as an agent to dilate the pupil, and rarely to increase blood pressure.

Uses

Decongestant

Phenylephrine is used as a decongestant, available as an oral medicine or as a nasal spray."

Which makes more sense, except for the 'eyedrops' part.

Goddamn third world journalists, LOL!

I think this is a reference to hydrazine eye drops which are used to treat glaucoma and other intra-ocular disorders, from China I think. I don't know what kind of affect they have on mood. Here is a link to a Chinese supplier that manufactures something called Phenyl">[link] hydrazine Hydrochloride. After doing some follow-up searches I think this is probably it. But who knows!

well, also what the hell is phenyl phenhydrochloride!?
