Countdown to 2012: solar storm alert!

Via Slashdot, we learn of this alarming confirmation that the end of civilization is at hand in the year 2012. Apparently a massive solar storm, an incredibly strong sunspot cycle, is headed our way - and when, dare we ask?

`Dikpati's forecast puts Solar Max at 2012. Hathaway believes it will arrive sooner, in 2010 or 2011.`

Anyone familiar with the Mayan Calendar? December 21, 2012 (13.0.0.0.0 in the Mayan Calendar) Coincidence?"

There are no coincidences! Everything is connected! Even Slashdot knows the truth! It's a sign, I tell you, a sign!

A sign of what, I don't exactly know, but that's beside the point.

Anyone read The Annals of Improbable Research? I love their Teacher's Guide, which offers the following advice when reading someone who thinks that he or she has discovered something about how the universe behaves (emphasis mine):

Is this scientist right - and what does "right" mean, anyway?

Can you think of even one different explanation that works as well or better?

Did the test really, really, really truly unquestionably, completely test what the author thought he was testing?

Is the scientist ruthlessly honest with himself about how well his idea explains everything, or could he be suffering from wishful thinking?

Some people might say this is foolish. Should you take their word for it?

Other people might say this is absolutely correct. Should you take their word for it?
