Florida's oxycodone epidemic

MSNBC has a video report on Florida's pain clinics where patients can get all the legal oxycodone they want, leading to an oxy epidemic and 11 fatal overdoses a day.

This prompted reader Jackie to write in our comments section last week:

Here in FL there is a pain killer pandemic, starting with young teens through the elderly. It is horrifying because EVERYONE knows at least one person who has died from an oxy od.

Thanks Roaldgold!

There r always going to b people who abuse medications whether legal or not. But for the people who r really suffering this medication gives them a life. I am one of those. I layed in bed & lost 60 lbs b'cuz the pain was so intense I threw up anything I tried to eat. I take oxycontin 2Xdy, I now have a life. I can function. I fought doctors trying to put me on this med for a long time b'cuz I had heard it was "hillbilly heroin". Now I realize the benefits. Try having failed back surgery, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and a surgery that was done on your esophogaus & has affected your whole digestive system. But yet people look at u like ur some kind of addict just b'cuz u take this particular medicine. For those of u who haven't suffered chronic pain that reduces u to wanting to end ur life just for relief...not everybody is abusing it & it is not a devil drug for those of us who follow our physicians directions. My doctor counts my pills every month to ensure his patients don't abuse this med. Blame the person who is falsifying pain just to get high, don't blame the med. Nobody pushes it down someone's throat. Isn't it about time people take ownership of their own actions instead of blaming doctors who help those in real pain? Somebody is always looking to blame someone else when a family member deceives doctors. What about all the alcohol sold...it kills everyday but nobody says its a killer drug. And they accept alcoholism as a "disease" its a choice. Take responsibility for what you do. That's one of the reasons our country is in the shape it is and courts can't address real criminals...someone is always trying to sue someone for their own choices in life. People need to quit putting blame on others.

these pills are the devil!! once someone has started the chance of them getting off clean is unlikely.. B 4 i share my story i want to say i apologize for ever hurting all the people i did. i swim in regret and i am a firm believer in karma...I used to sell these pills my first years in college in south florida...first i sold other drugs and when these hit the scene in florida it became the new cocaine of florida!! the $ i made was great and the people kept coming bck.. i have sent countless people to rehabs and ruined the lives of thier loved ones including the one overdoes sitution that was at my hands.. It wasnt until after a certain friend, roomate and girlfriend became highly addictive did i start to feel bad about what i was doing.. one of my clients who i became interested in i really tried to tell her to stop using.. i told her i wanted to get away from these things and they would ruin her life.. she became my girlfriend shortly after and i jus couldnt force myself to stop dealing it was a way of life that i wish i could take bck.. she was already using at the time and me selling is how we met.. for our first 2 months together i gave her pills. near x mas i had a change of heart and decided to stop selling them.. the crowd we were around and the countless inner small circles of users and dealers where at evry corner. i myself never took one of these pills until after i stopped dealing them and untill i felt that i should do one with my girlfriend.. the high was inense and it became our weekly routine to get high and vegitate in our apartment.. over the next month i didnt like the withdrawls i had and thought about how messed up the people were that i used to sell to.. i stopped and pleaded with her to change her ways... i fell in love with and addict and tried to harness and control her addiction.. for about the next 4 months together i believed i had gotten her dosage down and she was only using recreational.. boy was i wronge.. not only was she using everyday she was taking around 5-10 pills daily or within 48 hours... how could i have sold so many of these things did them myself and not have seen how bad she had gotten... she used to be my best friend, the best personallity and attitude, she went to school and we were inseperable...however, not only did she keep secrets.. she became scared to tell me she had a problem... the more i tried to stop it the more she slipped away and used.. i focussed our last 2 months together on getting her clean.. i bought suboxone from dealers tried getting her into a detox but nothing helped she loved the pills more than herself... finally it all came to and end after she had to go on a 3 week family vacation.. she had to withdrawl... at this time she called me from out of state and broke it off with me... she now lives in another state and is trying to get clean still to this day... her family is trying to help and keep her out of florida..If anyone knows of a group dedicated to stop the selling and distribution of these pills pls respond.. i have tried to tip off police but the dealers i know r still dealing and polluting these people's lives. the dealers i know sold her the pills behind my back.. they did not care about how it affected her life.. all they saw was the $... they didnt know she ruined her family relationship, they didnt think about how her personality changed, how she lied and became sketchy, how she had so much going for her and now cant even thik about school.. her life revolved around getting the pills or she couldnt function.. for all of u reading this saying look at this guy u were a dealer!! i want to say i know.. i also want to say that this pill has ruined my life its my karma for the previous years i sold them and i accept it... im trying to make a change in my small town here in south florida i want to help get these pills off the streets.. IF U EVER BELIEVE ANYTHING GOOD WILL COME OUT OF EITHER SELLING OR TAKING ROXIES I CAN PERSONALLY SAY U R MISTAKEN... ive lost my closest friends to this drug.. ive lost the love of my life do to this drug.. ive ruined the lives of many bc of this drug.. and if ur wondering what happendd to the $ i had saved bc of this drug... my girlfriend took 3/4 of it for her addiction within 1 month.. after she left i found out she took my bank card n nearly used 3000 on pills in a month and a half the money was dirty money so i dont care.. it was the fact that she stole from me to support her habbit.. i tried to clean her up and she just didnt want that...but i care about her and now she is gone. fell in to this horrible way of life.. and now i struggle too to go on... these pills are the devil and i pray to god everyday for forgivness.. for guidence and patience.. i pray that she is getting clean and i pray for one day that these pills b gone!!!

i JUST WANT TO LET YOU ALL KNOW ESPECIALLY THE ONES WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN IN CHRONIC PAIN THIS PAIN KILLER CHANGES LIVES FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT IT CAN NOT DO SIMPLE TASKS SUCH AS WALK THEIR DOG OR SIT IT A CAR OR IN ANY SEAT FOR ANY LONGER THAN 30 MINUTES OR FOR OTHER PEOPLE CANT STAND FOR LONGER THAN TEN MINUTES. THERE IS NO OTHER PAIN KILLER AS EFFECTIVE AS OXYCODONE. MOST PEOPLE WHO DO ABUSE IT DON'T GET PRESCRIBED TO IT, THEY USUALLY STEEL IT FROM THEIR GRAND MOM OR BUY IT FROM SOMEONE WHO GETS IT FROM PILL MILL WHICH THEY ARE WEEDING OUT. TO GET RID OF THIS MEDICATION IS CRAZY. i AM SORRY TO SOME OF YOU WHO LOST SOME ONE YOU LOVED TO THE ABUSE OF THE DRUG AND WAS UNEDUCATED ON THE DOSE THEY COULD TAKE OR WHO WANTED TO KILL THEMSELVES BUT FOR ALL OF YOU WHO ARE TRYING TO GET RID OF THE DRUG, TRY FINDING A NEW HOBBY AND IF IT EVER DOES GET OUTLAWED I HOPE YOU NEVER GET CANCER OR A ACCIDENT WHICH CAUSES PAIN FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. BY THE WAY IF THEY EVER GET RID OF THE DRUG THE STREETS WILL BE FILLED WITH HEROIN AND BLACK MARKET OXYCODONE MADE IN THE MIDDLE EAST WHICH WILL BE UNREGULATED AND EVEN MORE DANGEROUS. HEROIN HEROIN WILL FILL THE STREETS AND A EVEN MORE DEADLY AND ADICTIVE DRUG WILL BE PRESCRIBED AND IT IS CALLED PHYTINAL. SO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE NO CLUE WHAT IT IS LIKE TO LIVE IN PAIN AND ARE THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO HAS TO BE INVOLVED IN OTHER PEOPLES BUISNESS MAYBE YOU SHOULD PUSH TO LEGALIZE MEDICAL MARIJUANA BECAUSE THATS THE ONLY THING THAT CAN HELP PEOPLE WITH THIER CHRONIC PAIN AND PEOPLES ADDICTION PROBLEM

MR. WILLIAMS. : 2011-05-04 05:13:48
The comment from "guest : 2011-03-29 05:32:56" was as usual idiotic and commenting without thinking.

The Orlando Sentinel in or around 2003-4 was writing an article that lasted 7 days by i believe a lady named Bloodsworth. She had people mezmorized with the "horrors" of oxycodone ir and er. the article became front page news every day for a week and if you believed the crap that bloodsworth was saying, it was becoming apparent that she was on her way to a pulitzer prize.

On virtually every story she wrote, i contacted her nearly every day to let her know that her sources were bad and she was printing lies that only produced hysteria in the community. I broke my back, fractured ribs in 27 places and punctured my spleen from falling through a roof. the ribs did not heal properly and the impact caused 7 herniated disks. for two years i sufferred so horribly I was planning my suicide. Only the medication would take away enough pain where i could live at least a sub normal life.

So, after continually blasting miss bloodsworth and her article and warning the sentinel they were printing lies (the sentinel did nothing about it), finally after the last article of the seven dday series came out and it was a lengthy apology to the readers of the sentinel, saying that bloodsworth had fabricated most of the information and even had paid a heroin addict to claim he was hooked on oxycodone and was about to submit to a procedure that put the patient into a coma for 3-5 v days to get over the withdrawals. It was all false. these types of articles are really hurting people like me who have taken this medication for ten years now. without it, I would have gone insane from the pain.

My suggestion is that we don't need any more attention getting laws written by legislatures who have used "drug epidemics" in the past to boost their careers. It's disgusting! Let law enforcement handle the people who are selling it and leave people like me alone! So florida legislators; stop taking the easy way out to problems and do your jobs!

guest : 2011-04-27 06:07:57
florida needs to follow new york, they are clamping down big time on the drs, this is where it starts and this is where it needs to end. there are other pain releivers that arent as toxic or addictive as the oxys

Roxy & xanax - the deadly combo that killed my daughter's best friend. This shit is highly addictive. This is evil in pill form. It will steal your life away and hurt the ones that love you most.
guest : 2011-03-29 05:32:56
These little blue pills are evil. I "was" a recovering addict for 10 yrs, my brother OD'd and died last april. Then I started snorting roxys, again! Biggest mistake of my life. They have takin me completely out of society. I am letting the withdrawals run its course and I'm on day 4 of detoxing from them. It is living hell what I'm going thru, but its my fault. I am born and raised here in florida and every one I know plus there mother and fathers are all on blues ( roxys ). The government knows what's going on but won't do anything about it because the government gets 99% of all political contributions from pharmacy companies... they should only be perscribed to people who are terminally ill, not all these people walking into clinics with MRI's for there backs, every 8 out of 10 americans have back problems, so if we all went to pain management 80% of the US would be perscribed oxycodone??? C'mon government, do something! Quick!!
anonymous. : 2011-02-07 22:25:10
Common sense people...this is a huge problem that could be taken care of in Florida with a state database to keep people from doctor shopping, as well as pharmacy shopping. Better yet, a national database to take care of the problem. Florida has already passed a law for the database, but doesn't have the funding to put it into place. There would be many lives saved by just doing this. Also being called in any random time of the month's supply of medication for a count, as well as an appointment before the next prescription is due to be filled and having to have that pain medication counted to make sure the patient is not abusing nor selling the medication should help.
I have MS and there is no way I can have any kind of life without the medication. I have been on pain medication for over 10 years and would be confined to a bed or chair without it. That is how much pain I am in. The medication does help the pain so I can function, but I am never completely out of pain. There are some of us in chronic pain that need the medication. As far as the people who abuse it I feel for you and for your loved ones.

listen ive been on blues since i was 16 getting 240 prescribed to me at 18 im now 23 miserable worrying about when i can go to my doc next with a asshole boyfriend who im scared to leave cause he supports my habbit i'd advise anyone not to use them and i am in chronic pain as well ive had RA since i was 3 years old and ive been in 6 accidents so i know the whole in and outs of this drug
Tracey. : 2010-12-11 12:23:41
Wow...one person stated that they only take roxy's when they need one which isn't every day? Bull Sh_t!!! You are in denial. Those little blue pills are heaven sent for the manufacturer but for the people whose life they are ruining, they are the devil. Someone needs to shut it down. Get rid of the oxycodone and the oxycontin. People are killing for these pills. And everyone in here who says they arent addicted that take them or get a prescription, shut up, your ignorant to think anyone would believe that. GET HELP because if you dont, you will die!

I have been an addict for 7 years, before oxys, roxys, zani bars, soma comas, and oxydose liquid I hardly drank and on and off again smoked weed. I first did oxy liquid and wow, the feeling was so good I was scared I would fall asleep and not wake up. I started taking just a half a blue here and there before a whole one and then started snorting them before watching all my friends I sold to shoot up in front of me for 2 years. I finally was like here go get me a new package of rigs and I will try a blue and if I like that a 40mg oxy, namebrand, I had class, not a medicaid dealer loser obese redneck $*uck like most of Florida. I was getting namebrand roxy 30's made by endo before they were sued by purdue pharma. I have a friend whos mom goes to a pill mill and gets 120 k 8 dilaudids, I said you are wasting the script, namebrand dilaudids or nothing. I paid the whole thing 300 and took 60 from her, shot them all in 2 in a half weeks, 3 or 4 at a time. What a nice 2 or 3 weeks that was, I was homeless living in a van in Florida about nov till march 2009, showering at friends.I put 300 apps in, resumes, no call backs, but truthfully I couldn't have worked anyway. Now I am still an addict that goes every 2 weeks and the only reason I don't move to Ark or Co to be near family is I can't get the pills I have been hooked on almost 10 years and I am just 36. Jeb Bush stole so much money from Florida and outsourced so any jobs that every 3rd or 4th house in Sarasota Florida was selling pills to pay bills because no jobs existed here bradenton or even st, pete, maybe 15 hours at dunking donuts in tampa lol. Lastly the next drug to take over will be when the price comes down on OPANA 10mg instant, rig fills up a beautiful pink after you run it thru a micron filter and you will nod so hard, you pass out and sleep 3 hours even if you are an oxy junkie!!But for a few years dealing I was making 60grand a years and another 30k a year in the stock market, now I have nothing to show for it and living on a friends couch which I keep high to pay the only rent I could. Reading all this makes me want to go shoot another 30 but I've done m 6 or the day.

Epidemics ebb and flow. Oxycodone is a very effective narcotic though. It's just too bad that a large majority of people abuse this drug ( it produces a euphoria similar to heroin (diacetylmorphine)). dilaudid used to be popular, now all anyone wants is oxycontin, or roxicodone.

i live on capecod and it is huge over here too.seems like everybody i know is addicted to it.and its a pretty exspensive habbit if u dont have a prescription goes for a dollar a mg.a lot of people that sell it here go to florida pick up a shit load and sell it 25 to 30 a mg.shits getting crazy.
Tess. : 2010-08-09 20:33:41
Quite frankly I know people who do need pain killers to function and do not appear to be impaired ever as they do not abuse the medication. Honestly I will not say this drug however. I have 3 brothers addicted and close to death. I personally know people who are being legally prescribed this drug and are so addicted they are snorting and misusing it. Sadly they are also driving on the roads this way.. not just drunk drivers anymore! Funny thing is they seem to get away with it! A personal friend of mine who legally gets this drug is snorting it and has had five accidents in the last six months. The last one, he hit 3 cars and a florida highway patrol.. was Baker acted for the 3rd time in 6 months and not one ticket! Will be out tomorrow and back on the road again. My daughters boyfriend gets them prescribed legally and sells them on the street so he does not have to work. He is now snorting them as well due to the new laws regarding this drug. He is abusive and has guns in his house and 20 yr old kids coming to buy them with track marks up their arms in front of my grandchildren. I have called the turn in a pusher line.. I have gone to the local sheriffs department .. all to no avail.. even though he has a steady stream of traffic going in and out of the house they have done nothing. He also rolled his car 3 times hit a tree was drug tested ..had marijuana ..highly elevated levels of this drug and alcohol.. got a ticket for careless driving that was it! Go figure

What discredited pain management is not one thing in particular, it is a combination of many things. From various business owners that viewed Pain Management as a business only without any heed or concern for patient care. Crooked and dishonest business people are only partially to blame. Without the help of physicians, pain mngmt. offices would just be empty waiting rooms. Business owners cannot prescribe. Doctors do. Physicians should partake in the dirty calamity of shady pain mngmt., aka pill mills. There are many physicians that have prostituted his/her license, for their greated good; MONEY.
Wholesalers should also be held responsible for selling narcotics to clinics without ever setting foot in those clinics. Most of them did not do their due diligence to investigate who they were selling their meds to. Again, it amounts to good old American green; MONEY.
What about the State of FLorida? Is anyone going to hold them responsible for their lack of regulations? State of Florida, Agency for Health Care Administation (AHCA), should have been mandatory compliance for all Pain Mngmt. Centers. These are the cumulative reasons why pain management has become so polluted. It will take the effort of State of Florida Agency for Health Care Admin., DEA, local law enforcement agencies, Physicians and owners to help clean and legitimize Pain Management. Without putting all the ingredients together we'll only be spinning our wheels in place. Ultimately causing more stigma for bona fide patient (Cancer, HIV, AIDS, Glaucome, MS, Parkinsons, Neuropathy, failed surgeries, etc.) which are in dire need of pain medication. We, as a society can't seem to decipher or even care to distinguish between genuine pain mangmt patients, addicts or drug dealers. We tend to throw the baby out with the bath water, because fixing it requires work.

I don't understand all this bs. I am 24, I've been prescribed oxycodone 30mg for the past 3 yrs and before that I was prescribed percocet. I don't take the pills everyday- only when I am in pain. I've been in 3 different accidents including being thrown and trampled by a horse. I go to a pain clinic in tampa- the same one I have gone to since I was 15. Now all of a sudden I'm being drug tested every month that I go. Not only that but my "new" doc at still the same office is telling me that I'm abusing my pills because I have needle marks on my are. He shut right up when I pulled my blood donors card out. Just because alot of people are f@#$ing up on these pills it doesn't make everyone a junkie- what are the REAL pain patients suppose to take for pain w/o medicaion?

I have been the addict and the addict properly taking his meds. However, there is never enough. So All you people that did not spend the month in the hospital from a broken back after being hit by a drunk driver. You are welcome to have my pain...but you cant. So at least let me try to have so semblence at a normal life. I have to have opiates. I am sorry people use them for the wrong reason, to get high. I really wish they would just stop the drug period. I had a very imntellegent son who had a family and he's 27 yrs old now. He's been on the stuff since I beleive 18 for crohns disease and he had to spend wow I guess a total of almost 3 yrs of his life in jail and finally went to prison and got out in November of 2009 and guess where he is now! Back in the county jail waiting for his trials AGAIN, but this time he went beyond snorting or taking. YEP, a friggin needle and now I will loose my son again and there is nothing I can do because he got drugs in prison and they say they offer counceling in there and they are a lier! I will loose him for a long time and may not be a live to see him get out. I can't beleive that this stuff goes on because it never was like this when I was growing up. God help our kids and our american people to fight to get this drug off the market. I can't see how the ones who gives it to the american people sleep at night and they will have to deal with it with someone they love and then they'll see how it feels.HUMAN LIFE AND LOVED ONES CAN NOT BE REPLACED. DEATH IS A FINAL THING. SO HELP US GOD. I PLEED!!

what the fuck is going on here. prices of oxy's have doubled in the past week, soon to be 5 dollars a pill.

all i can predict is a serious crime wave of home invasions, theft, robberies, etc. junkies will always be junkies and they'll do whatever the hell they want to get pills. if people have legitimate problems, why fuck with them. i've been on oxys for 2 years and now all these junkies have ruined it for the people that need the meds. the dea better be ready to call in the SWAT because it's not going to be a very safe country when all we have left are minimum wage jobs that barely pay the rent, and going to the doctor costs more than that. i feel bad for the DEA people because they're job just got a lot more dangerous.

why the fuck does the dea have to fuck with people that need these pills. how am i supposed to pay 800 dollars a month just to keep medicated so i can work?

I've been on these for a few months now and I think good and bad of them. More good than bad. I've got arthritis at a young age (mid 20's) and being a performing musician, I use my hands a lot. Its my life. Oxycodone has helped keep my dream alive where the sugery's and BS gloves and all sorts of other shots and treatments havent. The withdrawl symptoms are pretty bad if you run out but as long as you read the labels and take them as prescribed, there should be no problem. It sucks for someone in pain to have their doc's office flooded with 100 wanna lil gangster gits with back MRI's that get a million 30mg oxy's and I can barely get what little I do. Then its a 4-5 hour trip to every pharmacy within 60 miles to find them. its ridiculous. Life was good till they blew up as the new drug of choice. I hope the abuser's do OD. Then them and they're lil wannabe homies will quit and us who really need them can get back to our "normal" lives.

We live in a small town in CFL and married for 11yrs. 3 years ago my wife broke her hand. It started out as Hydrocodone. Then that wasn't enough. Her friend started bringing her Zanex, Darvocet, then Roxy. She took to the Roxy. Super mom pill she calls it. She started only taking it at night. I tried one. Then it became an every Friday, Saturday, night thing. Then I was taking then every night with her for the sexual effects. One day I finally realized that Sundays sucked. I would stay in bed all day but was ok on Monday. I stopped but she continued. Eventually she was up to 6-8 a day, and I was an A@@ H*%$. I moved out and her friend basically moved in. Soon some of her jewelry was missing so I went to the local pawn shop and found it and guess who was on camera. He goes to jail. It went on for a year then one night she decided she had to get off the Roxys. I had to go to an employee to get some Hydrocodone to cut the withdrawals. Over the next year and a half she went to morphine then the doctor cut her off and her OBGYN put her on Lorazepan. She met another friend and he wanted to try Roxys. Well it started all over again. Now he is out of the picture and someone else supplies it. I'm an A@@ H*%$ again and now on top of it she drinks Jager and Crown. Tonight I was accused of screwing around since Im not screwing her. Due to the economy my new job puts me on the road and more is spent on her habit than the power and food bills. Sorry but I dont want her high.

Came home last night from being gone for 5 days. When I got home she was fine, then 1 hour later shes loaded and at 12pm wants to chat. I had to work this morning. Tonight I come home, was supposed to be gone for 4 days, and she drunk on a bottle of Jager. Our 6 year old was not even asleep yet.

Our house looks like a dump. The dogs sh$* everywhere, the Christmas tree is still half up, don't know the last time the floors were cleaned, the bathroom had dog Sh$* hardened on the floor under dirty clothes that are everywhere throughout the master suite. This was a million dollar house now it is a dump and she is ok with it.

Yes, Roxys will screw up a family!!!

I can't just abandon her, dont want to put her away from our son, but I dont want him effected either. I don't know how much more I can handle.

My girlfriend OD'd on roxy's last april. if she were here today she'd probably tell you all to go to hell. she hated her addiction but the system never allowed her to get the help she needed. the pills are too easy to get. she even got them in rehab.

California's pain clinics prescribe an eight of Cotton Candy.

Flordia's pain clinics prescribe 50 30mg roxicontin a day.

Hmm

Basher-yea you sure presented a great argument there! It's always obvious what a person is going to say when they start off calling others "morons". I saw someone OD on beer the other day too....guess that means its more easily accessable in FL & that only "hillbillies" drink it? Have you ever lived in CA? Makes drugs of all kinds-legal & illegal-look miniscule in the rest of the country. Come back after you have actual facts rather than makng yoursef look ike the "moron".

Hey FLpainpt, are for real!?? Wake up moron, I just witnessed an oxy OD this morning in the parking lot of my business (which happens to be only 3 blocks away from the nearest pain clinic). Young girl, mid 20's, from N Carolina. Cardiac arrest, now in the ICU of the local hospital. There were 4 of them in the car, they had already hit 2 pain clinics and were on their way to a 3rd. This was the 3rd time they came to FL in recent months strictly to buy pills. Using as directed is one thing, but when you start snorting them and injecting them, something is wrong. I can't wait until they change the laws, I'm tired of these backwoods-dirtbag-smelly-hillbillies. Time for them to go back where they came from and STAY THERE!

Yeah, there's a drug problem in this country but we'd be much better off with spending the $ on education and rehab. The more you criminalize stuff, the worse the situation will become. MDMA used to be legal and I never heard of any overdoses on it. Then it become illegal and the crime rings took it over, quality control went to hell, and people are now ODing.

Similar situation in oklahoma. We were one of the first states to make it more difficult to get pseudofed because of the meth situation. Now the mexican mafia has taken it over, there's now gang shootings because of crossing other dealers' meth turf, and the small timers have come up with ways to make it that are easier and require less ingredients - the problem, though, is that it's a more dangerous method and causes explosions and fires. Before the new laws there were still addicts, but apartment complexes werent burning down because of it and there werent gang shootings over it.

Make the drugs more accessible, spend the money on education and rehab, and we'll be a whole lot better off. Still not convinced? Consider how things were back around 100 years ago when you could walk into any pharmacy and get cocaine, heroin, etc. We didnt have near the problems we have now.

Umm....obviously this is just another 1-sided "report" that doesnt look at "facts", just he-said, she-said bs. If we who live in chronic pain every minute of our lives truly WERE "high", we might have a chance to laugh/smile, work, LIVE! Hell no-we live our lives in tears & pain, often times thru no fault of our own (ie: injured on duty, as in my case, saving someone elses life every day of our own) & b/c we are prescribed meds for that pain we're suddenly "junkies"? Oh thats right.....you all dont sit in MY pain Dr's office every single month, pissing in a cup or having blood drawn to prove as an adult I can "follow directions"....funny thing is-I wouldnt have it any other way! At least this way, my Dr has NO DOUBT that I'm definitely NOT "abusing" my meds!

I really feel sorry for all of those who are left to suffer in REAL pain b/c Drs are being squeezed by the Govt-who cant run ANYTHING well, btw-& arent able to get the medications they NEED thanks to the "real" addicts, & FALSE reporting such as this. Do any of u know the stats on the # of suicides by chronic pain patients wo cant get help & cant live w/the pain any longer? Or maybe you would see it differently if you were told you cant have your insulin, blood pressure, depression, ADHD or cancer meds simply b/c SOME people are stupid enough to disregard the Drs instructions? And dont tell me u honestly believe his crap about FL being so much "worse" than any other place! Ive lived many places....the pain control/care I receive here in FL is by FAR the most "strict" of any of them.

BTW-you folks ARE aware that NOT taking prescribed meds as ordered is also considered "abuse" right? It doesnt JUST mean taking too much, or someone elses, or selling, etc. Keep that in mind next time you're so quick to judge others-esp for something that, quite frankly, is none of your damn business! If we would all go back to "the old days" where neighbors cared but didnt meddle-helped each other instead of hindering...perhaps the USA would still be the great country it used to be. Its sad the kids of today dont have the luxury of the same upbringing...now instead, its all about entitlement, & big Govt telling us all what we can & cant do....so very sad....

I'm skeptical that overdosing is really a problem. I've been a user for years and I've never heard first hand about anybody overdosing.

One of the reasons pharmaceuticals are far more safe than heroin off the street is because of the absolute control over dosing that they allow.

I'm of the opinion that as long as somebody isn't looking to get WASTED 24/7, then he or she should be able to comfortably maintain a pharmaceutical opiate habit indefinitely.

awesome! this is the first thing that has ever made me want to go to florida.

Yet another reason why I'm ready to move out of this shithole of a state!

This is nothing new to anyone who's been around Florida for the last 5 years to witness the exponential decay of this society. My sister's an addict, my other sister was an addict b4 that, and now I am an addict. It doesn't stop there, best friends and their parents and brothers are addicts or doctor shoppers. Now I know dozens people, just in my neighborhood, who go down South (for their so called pain) and get massive scripts of whatever they want. But then again 50 years ago you could walk right into a good old doctors office and ask for straight up Morphine, cocaine, heroine, it didn't matter then but that's what sparked this whole mess. It wasn't gateway drugs or the corruption of youth, it was nothing more than the government marketing synthetic illicit and highly addicting forms of desired drugs...a way to get there piece of the pie.

No news story can really do justice just how bad it's gotten in Florida. I'm pretty embroiled in the "game" around here, and luckily, I don't know anyone that's ODed yet... it's just a matter of time though. People think that just because a doctor scripted it, it's all fine and dandy. If you ever have the (dis)pleasure of walking into one of the clinics they're talking about in the vid... you'll laugh hysterically. They're hole in the wall, run by staffs of young kids and a single doc that doesn't care. The pharmacies know exactly what's up too. They'll joke with you about making sure you get enough sold to make rent :|.

This story can be seen as a warning for what might happen if drugs were legalized. But oxycodone is an extreme example of a highly addictive, highly lethal drug being provided in pill form in warehouse quantities. It is hard to overdose smoking opium, but it is all too easy to shake an extra couple oxys from the bottle and not wake up. Opium is safer and arguably more fun, yet you can't find opium on the street, only heroin and oxys. The paradox in supply logic is a product of drug markets being inverted by the intervention of government prohibition and the subsequent rise of the pharmaceutical industry.
Adam. : 2009-05-03 14:09:44
I was starting to wonder if people would be this way after all once we legalize drugs. Wondering if there was any truth to the warrior's "send a message" banter after all. Many americans are retarded after all and rely on their own suggestibility to survive ("burn."), but let's try it with heroin first and see who is right. Not everyone is going to pick up a needle. This is because oxy was legal from the start. Banning a class of drugs (opium, heroin) which are just as dangerous as their patentable- and therefore- pharamceutical counterparts (oxycodone, morphine) sends a REVERSE message to people that they can take them like fucking candy.

Whatever. At least one of our problems is starting to solve itself. These idiots can OD on their own precious, legally-sanctioned mommy-government drugs so they aren't around to prove the rest of us wrong when we legalise the black market.

And by the way taxing drugs we have simply banned isn't legalizing them, cigarettes that are tax-free (and arsenic-, benzene-, and cyanide-free too - think about it!) contribute just as much to organized crime as heroin sales do. We see it on Canadian television, crime stoppers begging people to narc on cigarette dealers. The first time I saw that, I couldn't imagine ANY idiot being convinced. Like they want to pay $10 a pack.

WTF?. : 2009-05-02 01:36:22
Perhaps these people should try adjusting their dose.
dreamdust. : 2009-05-01 17:52:37
Yup. I know two. Plus a couple of functioning addicts. Oxy is HUGE, it has become the opiate of choice because of it's quality, price, availability, and ease-of-use.
