Gov. Jim Doyle signed a bill Thursday outlawing salvia divinorum, a hallucinogenic herb. The bill was originally authored by former state Rep. Sheldon Wasserman in 2007 when he learned of salvia’s potential to induce intense hallucinations when used recreationally.
“You can find out quickly, this has the potential for danger,” Wasserman said.
The legislation regulating salvia has since been re-introduced and passed in the Senate last month. Wasserman worked with Rep. David Cullen, D-Milwaukee, who was previously co-author of the bill and is now the primary author, to see the bill become a law.
“We worked together on this thing to really make this happen,” Wasserman said.
The legislation prohibits manufacturing, distributing or delivering the active chemical ingredient and instates a maximum fine of $10,000 for violators. Wasserman said the legislation is directed more toward the distributor and less toward the user.

The report says, "people are always out there trying to make a buck. Always trying to 'skirt' the law?" HA! That is probably the most ironic thing I have ever heard. And I say that because this is coming from a news report that just happens to be reporting BULLSHIT to make a buck. Always trying to dramatize a story to make a buck. Skirt the law? Authorities will always try to skirt the law, use ANY excuse to make anything they want illegal that they see fit. They say salvia is a substitute for marijuana? What kind of reporting is that? Salvia has nothing to do with marijuana. Skirt the law? What the heck does that even mean? Salvia was legal in that state until now. How was it skirting the law? Also, concentrating an active ingredient doesn't make it stronger, it makes it more concentrated, though they reported salvia as it is "getting stronger". Ridiculous to say "salvia was originally sold to be 5 times stronger". All that means is by weight, a 5x package of salvia contains 5x more active ingredient (salvinorin) than the SD itself. Of course, I know that's too complicated for a reporter to understand, and irrelevant to their motives. No, just tell the people "salvia is getting stronger AND more dangerous".

As journalists, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Calling salvia an alternative to marijuana is like calling a plane an alternative to walking; they are two extremely different substances.

Stop your bullshit drama around drugs and report some god damned facts. Your lack of verification is why I will never become a broadcast journalist. All you care about is exciting people.
