Guess what, Latin America? According to a poll sponsored by the Organization of American States, and carried out by La Nacion, a daily newspaper in Argentina, one country rises to the top of the heap when it comes to sucking down pot smoke in Latin America. Who gets the prize? Why, that would be Argentina, of course!
The Argentine daily reported Sunday that six percent of Argentina’s population are habitual marijuana smokers, compared to 5.3 percent of Chile’s population, which ranked second. Argentina also led all other Latin American nations in the consumption cocaine, with 2.5 percent of Argentina’s high school students consuming cocaine regularly.
The poll figures showed Argentine cocaine busts up by 37 percent in 2006, compared to 2005, while marijuana busts jumped by 177 percent. Argentine security forces report that much of the cocaine found in Argentine is from other countries, in transit to European markets. The marijuana comes from Paraguay and is mostly destined to the Argentine market.
These are bold statements, considering how pervasive these drugs are throughout South and Central America, but if a poll conducted by a daily newspaper could come to such clear conclusions, and then that poll could get reported as major news, clearly the situation is exactly what they say it is, and they've got the mostest!
