Michigan legalizes medical marijuana

We all know the big news about yesterday's election, but there was also a medical marijuana bill that passed amidst all the hope:

Michigan voters have approved a ballot proposal that legalizes the use of marijuana for severely ill patients.

With 33 percent of the precincts reporting, 63 percent, or 847,244 people, voted "yes" on Proposal 1. Thirty-seven percent, or 491,593 voters, were opposed.

The proposal removes state penalties for registered patients to buy, grow, and use small amounts of marijuana.

63 to 37 in favor of medical marijuana? Wow, you sure the machines weren't rigged on that one?

In other news, Massachusetts voters have decriminalized possession of up to an ounce of marijuana favoring minor fines instead of criminal penalties for personal use. This measure also passed by a margin of 65 to 35. Hells yeah.

From [link]

* Berkeley, California's, Measure JJ, essentially a zoning initiative that would allow dispensaries operating in the city to expand into more non-residential districts, won with 62% of the vote. The campaign was organized by Citizens for Sensible Medical Cannabis Regulation.

* In Hawaii County, Hawaii (the Big Island), a lowest law enforcement priority initiative for adult marijuana possession won with 66% of the vote. The campaign organized by Project Peaceful Skies was an outgrowth of the movement to end intrusive marijuana eradication raids.

* In Fayetteville, Arkansas, another lowest priority initiative passed. Some 62% of voters in the Northwest Arkansas college town agreed with Sensible Fayetteville and its director, Ryan Denham, that police had better things to do than bust pot smokers. Sensible Fayetteville itself is an umbrella organization including the Alliance for Drug Reform Policy in Arkansas, The Omni Center for Peace, Justice & Ecology, the Green Party of Washington County, University of Arkansas NORML and the Alliance for Reform of Drug Policy in Arkansas Inc.

We have a medical pot law in California. The state says yes, but the feds say no. So it's half-legal.

I'm from MI and did vote for the use of marijuana. Now since I have been out of work for so long I want to use my caregiving skills and weed grow knowledge to those who are in need. Anyone know how to go about this??

True, it's only a matter of time before these rights get taken back like the gay marriage issue in cali and elsewhere. This is the first i've heard of pot issues being voted on, and while it's nice for medical users, we still need a lot more freedoms, and the Feds will still go after anyone. kiss my barack ass (.com)

re: gay rights - All rights movements go through cycles of gains and backlash, two steps forward one step back. All at once is too fast for most people. Time will sort this inequity out, maybe not as fast as you'd like, but at least sexual orientation rights are a legitimate issue now. 21st century still has a long way to go. We just got started.

i support marijuana, but why didnt more people give a fuck about gay rights? this country is filled with hate and it is disgusting.

I hear there were 13 marijuana initiatives on the state ballots (I think that was the number). Usually people pay attention to these and they are quite divisive, but I guess the media outlets thought the presidential race was a better story to get people worked up about.

Only sounds reasonable to me. Good that things are happening somewhere though.
