Oakland voters approve marijuana tax

Oakland voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved the nation’s first ever business tax on retail marijuana sales.

According to preliminary election results, approximately 80 percent of Oakland voters approved the new tax (which appeared on the ballot as Measure F), which imposes an additional tax for “cannabis businesses” of $18 for every $1,000 of gross receipts beginning January 1, 2010.

Presently, Oakland’s medical cannabis dispensaries are taxed at the same rate as other retail sales businesses ($60 per year for the $50,000 of gross receipts, plus $1.20 for each additional $100,000).

Four dispensaries are licensed by the Oakland City Council to sell and dispense medical marijuana.

According to a financial analysis by the Oakland City Auditor, Oakland’s new cannabis business tax will generate an estimated $300,000 in additional annual tax revenue.

Adam isn't dumb, he's right on the money. The clubs are already paying 10% in sales tax. This is a guilt-tax. This is another means to OPPRESS Cannabis users for their personal choices.

If you think it gets us closer to legalization you're delusional.

My problem with this is that they are requiring a higher tax rate than even pharmacies. This makes no sense and penalizes those trying to help the sick.

Adam your dumb! you obviously have never been to CA and you haven't the slightest idea about the variety and intelligence of the pot smokers in America. this is a huge step towards the legalization and acceptance of pot by the government. I would be willing to bet you any sort of money that when Obama gets re-elected we will see the legalization of pot. Your a dumb bitch.

As I understand it, if we can trick governments into legalising cannabis for tax revenue benefit, those with any sense will grow their own pot without fear of the law, whilst those too lazy to look after a plant will spend extortionate amounts of money on something they enjoy. It's their choice.

But I may be wrong! They may just make it illegal to grow any number of plants without an expensive license...

If this makes anyone here happy you're a fucking idiot.
The federal laws against marijuana will never be abolished and this marijuana tax is just another book to throw at you.

Unless I'm mistaken, pot taxes have been passed in less than pot-friendly states before just so you can charge dealers with tax evasion, they go away for ten more years.

The mainstream media has once again done its job, this time synonimising 'legitimate' with 'sales tax.' Like the article pointed out, it's already taxed in Oakland - at the same rate as EVERYTHING, because there is a tax on EVERYTHING.

Look whether any of you like it or not, whoever has been championing this as a 'good idea' has been guilted into paying taxes by the state. They beat us, humiliate us, chase us, jail us, take our kids and homes away from us, they even rape and kill us for being any sort of marijuana user we happen to be, AND NOW THEY HAVE EXCISED A TAX FROM US BASED ON YOUR GUILT. 1.8% IS TOO FUCKING MUCH WHEN THE POGROM ON MARIJUANA USERS CONTINUES!
